This article explains when to seek urgent medical help while using weight loss medication, including specific symptoms that require immediate attention. Use this guidance to recognise serious warning signs and understand when to call 999 or go to A&E without delay.

Severe Vomiting

Severe vomiting is defined as three or more episodes of vomiting in one day, especially if any of the following apply:

  • Vomit looks like coffee granules.

  • Vomit contains blood.

  • Vomiting occurs alongside a fever (high temperature).

Severe Stomach Pain

Severe stomach pain includes pain that:

  • Is very intense (around 8 out of 10 or higher) and makes it hard to focus on anything else.

  • Makes it nearly impossible to carry out normal daily activities, such as walking, getting dressed, or eating.

  • Does not improve with rest or over-the-counter pain relief.

  • Radiates to the back, underneath the right ribcage, or to the right shoulder.

  • Occurs alongside severe vomiting (three or more episodes in one day).

Severe Pain Under the Right Ribcage

Call 999 or go to A&E if you experience severe pain underneath the right ribcage that may spread to the shoulder or back, particularly if it occurs with:

  • Vomiting.

  • A high temperature.

  • A rapid heartbeat.

Neurological Symptoms

Seek urgent medical help if you experience both of the following:

  • Dizziness.

  • Numbness or weakness affecting the face, arms, or legs.

Breathing or Allergic Symptoms

Call 999 or go to A&E immediately if you experience:

  • Difficulty breathing.

  • Swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat.

(These may be signs of a severe allergic reaction.)

Signs of Very Low Blood Sugar

In someone who is unresponsive or not behaving normally, signs of very low blood sugar may include:

  • Dizziness.

  • Irritability.

  • Confusion.

  • Rapid heartbeat.

  • Sweating.

This is a medical emergency and requires immediate attention.
